Commercial retaining wall, sidewalk and sod in Annapolis, MD

Retaining wall, sidewalk and sod at an Annapolis shopping center.

FEATURED PROJECT · ANNAPOLIS, MD

The project at a glance.

This large commercial project was a retaining wall, sidewalk and sod installation at an Annapolis shopping center. A row of concrete jersey barriers lined the sidewalk along the front of the property, with a grass slope rising behind them. We removed the barriers, excavated along the edge of the walk, poured a new concrete sidewalk strip, built a segmental block retaining wall to hold the slope and finished the area with fresh sod.

Step by step.

1. Removing the jersey barriers

The work started with the concrete jersey barriers that lined the sidewalk. Our crew lifted them out with a loader, working at night.

2. Excavating along the sidewalk

With the barriers gone, we dug out the soil along the edge of the existing sidewalk to make room for the new concrete strip and the wall.

3. Pouring a new concrete sidewalk strip

Next, we poured and finished a new strip of concrete alongside the existing walk, with cones and caution tape keeping people off it while it set. Learn more: Concrete

4. Building the segmental block retaining wall

Then came the retaining wall: segmental block laid in courses along the back edge of the new sidewalk, holding the slope that rises toward the shopping center. The wall steps down at its ends to meet the grade. Learn more: Retaining Walls

5. Grading behind the wall

Behind the finished wall, the soil was shaped into a smooth slope, ready for sod.

6. Fresh sod to finish

We finished with fresh sod on the slope behind the wall and on the mounded bed near the shopping center sign, leaving a clean, green edge along the walk. Learn more: Sod & Lawn

Barriers out, a finished frontage in.

Temporary barriers along a walk make a property look unfinished. On this job, a permanent block wall, a new sidewalk strip and new turf replaced them. If your commercial property has a slope, a worn sidewalk edge or barriers that were never meant to stay, we can walk the site with you and put the scope in writing.
