CONCRETE · ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY

Good concrete is decided below the surface.

Concrete is unforgiving: once it's poured, it's done. That's why the work that matters happens before the truck arrives, with layout, excavation, a compacted base, solid forms and drainage planned in from the start. Riverside handles concrete work for homeowners across Anne Arundel County, from a single hot tub pad to a full driveway, and we start every job with a free on-site estimate and a clear written proposal.

What we pour

Concrete patios

Poured patios sized and shaped for how you'll use the space, with a finish that gives good footing and cleans up easily. Add stamped patterns or color for a stone or brick look in one continuous surface. Prefer individual units? See our paver and stone patios.

Concrete driveways

New and replacement concrete driveways, formed and finished with the right slope so water runs away from your garage and your foundation.

Walkways and sidewalks

Front walks, side-yard paths and sidewalks that connect your driveway, steps and entry with safe, level footing.

Hot tub, shed and equipment pads

Level, correctly sized pads for hot tubs, sheds and AC or other equipment, built on a prepared base so what sits on them stays put. See one we built: Retaining Walls, Hot Tub Pad & Patio in Crownsville, MD.

Stamped and decorative concrete

Stamped patterns, color and textured finishes that mimic stone, slate or brick, for patios, walkways and entry areas.

Steps and slabs

Poured steps, landings and general-purpose slabs wherever you need a solid, level surface.

A recent commercial job: concrete walk repair with drainage

At a commercial property in Northern Virginia, the concrete walk along the building was cracked and worn at the curb. We replaced the damaged concrete with a new walk that has a trench drain set into it to carry water off the surface. The first row shows the same corner before and after; the second shows the fresh pour and a close look at the trench drain; the last shows the finished walk along the side of the building. How a concrete job goes.

Site walk and layout

We look at slope, drainage, access and how you'll use the surface, then mark out the footprint with you on site.

Excavation and base

We remove old concrete or poor soil where needed and build a compacted base suited to the ground and the load.

Forms, pour and finish

Forms are set to line and grade, joints are planned to control cracking, and the concrete is placed and finished to the surface you chose.

Cure and walkthrough

Fresh concrete needs time to cure before it takes full use, and we tell you when it's ready for foot traffic, vehicles or a hot tub. We walk the finished work with you. We warranty most of our project-based work; ask about the specific warranty for your project.

Timelines depend on size, access, weather and site conditions, and your estimate includes a timeline for your project.

Finishes and options

Broom finish

A fine texture drawn across the fresh surface for slip resistance. A common choice for driveways, walks and steps.

Stamped concrete

Patterns pressed into the surface and usually paired with color, to get the look of stone, slate or brick without individual pieces.

Exposed aggregate

The top layer is washed back to reveal the stone in the mix, giving a textured, natural look with good footing.

Color and sealer

Color can be mixed through or applied to the surface, and a sealer can deepen the look and make cleaning easier. We'll tell you whether it makes sense for your finish.

We'll recommend options for your home and budget at the estimate, and explain why.

Permits and local rules in Anne Arundel County

  • Permits and grading. What's required depends on the size, location and scope of the work. The County's permit guide says a patio doesn't need a building permit, but a Standard Grading Plan may apply depending on size and disturbed area, and driveways, work near the road and structures over a pad can have their own rules. Anne Arundel County: Do I need a permit? · Standard Grading Plan
  • Critical Area. Within 1,000 feet of tidal water, lot coverage is limited, and concrete counts as a hard surface. Anne Arundel County: Critical Area
  • HOA and City of Annapolis. Some communities and the City have their own approval steps, so check before work starts. We'll help you work out what to ask.
  • Hot tubs. The County's permit guide says hot tubs require a permit, so plan the pad and the tub together. Anne Arundel County: Do I need a permit?
  • Drainage. Concrete sheds water rather than absorbing it, so grade and drainage are settled before anything is poured.

Frequently asked questions

What concrete work do you do?

We pour concrete patios, driveways, walkways and sidewalks, pads for hot tubs, sheds and equipment, stamped and decorative concrete, and steps and slabs. Tell us what you have in mind and we'll walk the site and quote it at your free on-site estimate.

Do you do stamped concrete?

Yes. Stamped and decorative concrete lets you get a stone, slate or brick look in a single poured surface, with color and pattern choices. We'll show you options at the estimate and talk through upkeep, including sealing.

Can you pour a hot tub pad?

Yes. A hot tub pad should be level, sized for the tub and built on a prepared base, with access and electrical planned around it. The County's permit guide says hot tubs require a permit, so we plan the pad and the tub together. You can see a concrete hot tub pad we did in Crownsville on our Projects page.

Do you remove old concrete?

Yes. Removing old, cracked or failed concrete and preparing the area for new work is part of how we approach a replacement, and we include it in your estimate so there are no surprises.

Do I need a permit for concrete work in Anne Arundel County?

It depends on the size and location of the project, how close it is to tidal water or wetlands, and whether you're in the City of Annapolis, an HOA community or elsewhere in the county. The County's permit guide says a patio doesn't need a building permit, but a Standard Grading Plan may apply; see the County permit guide. Driveways and work near the road can have their own rules, so we'll help you identify what to check.

Should I choose concrete or pavers?

Poured concrete is a single, continuous surface that suits driveways, walks and pads, and it can be stamped or colored. Pavers are individual units that handle ground movement and can be repaired by lifting and resetting pieces. The right choice depends on your site, drainage and the look you want, and we'll talk it through at your free estimate. See our paver and stone patios.
